Cervical ripening refers to the biochemical and structural changes that occur in the cervix to prepare it for labour and delivery. This process involves breakdown of collagen, increase in water content, and changes in glycosaminoglycans that result in cervical softening, shortening (effacement), and opening (dilation). Ripening may occur naturally as pregnancy progresses or be induced artificially using prostaglandins, mechanical methods, or other agents when labour induction is indicated. Assessment of cervical ripeness is typically evaluated using the Bishop score.
