Full Definition
Molding refers to the normal physiological process where the fetal skull bones overlap and change shape during labour to accommodate passage through the maternal pelvis. This adaptive mechanism is possible due to the presence of sutures and fontanelles in the fetal skull. The degree of molding can indicate the duration and difficulty of labour, with excessive molding suggesting prolonged compression. Molding typically resolves within hours to days after birth as the skull bones return to their normal position.
