Full Definition
Moulding is the temporary overlapping and reshaping of fetal skull bones that occurs during labor as the head passes through the maternal pelvis. This physiological adaptation is possible due to the presence of fontanelles and sutures in the fetal skull, which allow the bones to overlap and compress. Moulding helps accommodate the fetal head to the dimensions of the birth canal and is typically reversible within days after delivery. Excessive moulding may indicate cephalopelvic disproportion or prolonged labor.
