ovarian torsion

Rotation of the ovary around its vascular pedicle, causing ischemia and requiring emergency surgical intervention.

Full Definition

Ovarian torsion occurs when the ovary twists around its supporting ligaments, compromising blood supply and causing acute pelvic pain. This gynecological emergency most commonly affects enlarged ovaries due to cysts, tumors, or ovarian hyperstimulation. Prompt diagnosis and surgical detorsion are essential to preserve ovarian function and prevent necrosis. The condition presents with sudden-onset severe pelvic pain, often accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Delayed treatment may necessitate oophorectomy.

Usage

Usage note: Always document the degree of torsion and ovarian viability in surgical reports.
