Restitution is a normal step in the mechanism of labour where the delivered fetal head rotates to realign with the fetal shoulders, which remain in the anteroposterior diameter of the pelvis. This occurs immediately after the head is delivered and before delivery of the shoulders. The rotation is typically about 45 degrees and indicates normal progress through the cardinal movements of labour. In obstetric documentation, editors should ensure that restitution is properly documented as part of the normal delivery sequence, and note any absence of restitution which may indicate shoulder complications.
