Vertex presentation is the optimal fetal presentation for vaginal delivery, occurring when the fetal head is flexed and the crown (vertex) is the first part to enter the birth canal. This presentation occurs in approximately 95% of term deliveries and is associated with the lowest risk of complications during delivery. The fetal head is well-flexed with the chin tucked toward the chest, allowing the smallest diameter of the fetal head to pass through the pelvis. In clinical documentation, editors should distinguish vertex presentation from other cephalic presentations such as brow or face presentation, which carry different delivery implications.
