Universal design is an architectural and product design approach that aims to create environments, products, and systems that are inherently accessible and usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for specialized design or adaptations. The concept, developed by architect Ron Mace, encompasses seven core principles: equitable use, flexibility in use, simple and intuitive use, perceptible information, tolerance for error, low physical effort, and size and space for approach and use. In occupational therapy practice, universal design principles guide environmental modifications and equipment recommendations that benefit not only individuals with disabilities but all users. This approach is more cost-effective and aesthetically pleasing than retrofitting spaces with specialized accessibility features after construction.
