Fundus autofluorescence is a specialized imaging modality that captures the natural fluorescence emitted by fluorophores within retinal tissues, particularly lipofuscin in the retinal pigment epithelium, without the use of exogenous contrast agents. In ocular oncology, this technique is particularly valuable for evaluating choroidal nevi and melanomas, as it can detect lipofuscin accumulation (orange pigment) overlying these lesions, which appears as areas of hyperautofluorescence. The presence and extent of hyperautofluorescent deposits help differentiate between dormant nevi and lesions at risk for malignant transformation. Additionally, fundus autofluorescence can reveal tumor-related changes in the overlying retinal pigment epithelium that may not be apparent on conventional color photography, making it an essential tool for monitoring suspicious choroidal lesions.

Usage note: Specify wavelength (typically 488nm excitation) and document hyperautofluorescent versus hypoautofluorescent areas.
