Tumor hollowness is an ultrasonographic descriptor used to characterize intraocular masses that demonstrate low internal reflectivity or acoustic transparency on A-scan examination. This finding suggests a more fluid or less dense internal composition compared to typical solid tumors. Hollow-appearing tumors may represent cystic lesions, necrotic areas within larger masses, or tumors with high fluid content such as certain metastatic lesions or amelanotic melanomas with significant internal necrosis. The degree of hollowness is assessed by comparing the internal spike height to the initial tumor spike, with significant acoustic transparency indicating possible cystic or necrotic components that may influence treatment planning and prognosis.
