Full Definition
Anterior synechia refers to abnormal adhesions that form between the iris and structures in the front of the eye, including the corneal endothelium, trabecular meshwork, or peripheral cornea. These adhesions can be peripheral (at the angle) or central (to the corneal endothelium) and may result from inflammation, trauma, surgery, or chronic angle-closure. Peripheral anterior synechiae are particularly significant in glaucoma as they can block aqueous outflow and increase intraocular pressure.
