Full Definition

Capsular fibrosis refers to the formation of scar tissue within the lens capsular bag following cataract surgery, leading to capsular contraction and potential complications. This process occurs as lens epithelial cells undergo fibrous metaplasia and produce collagen, causing the capsule to shrink and become opaque. Capsular fibrosis can result in IOL decentration, capsular phimosis, or complete capsular closure around the IOL optic. Risk factors include incomplete removal of lens epithelial cells, certain IOL materials, and inflammatory conditions. Prevention strategies include thorough cortical cleanup and consideration of capsular tension rings in high-risk cases. Treatment may require YAG laser capsulotomy or surgical intervention.
