Choroidal neovascularization

Abnormal blood vessel growth from the choroid through Bruch's membrane, often associated with age-related macular degeneration.

Full Definition

Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) represents the pathological growth of new blood vessels from the choriocapillaris through defects in Bruch's membrane into the sub-retinal pigment epithelium or subretinal space. This process is most commonly associated with exudative age-related macular degeneration but can occur secondary to other retinal conditions. In surgical contexts, CNV may complicate vitreoretinal procedures or influence surgical planning. Documentation should specify the CNV type (Type 1, 2, or 3), location relative to the fovea, and any associated features such as hemorrhage or exudation.
