Full Definition

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is a laser vision correction procedure that uses an excimer laser to reshape the corneal surface and correct refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Unlike LASIK, PRK removes the corneal epithelium entirely before laser treatment rather than creating a flap. The epithelium regenerates over several days following surgery. PRK may be preferred in patients with thin corneas, irregular corneal surfaces, or those at high risk for flap-related complications. Recovery is typically longer than LASIK due to epithelial healing, but long-term visual outcomes are comparable. The procedure is also known as surface ablation.
