Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) occurs when the vitreous gel separates from its normal attachments to the posterior retina and optic disc. In surgical contexts, PVD status significantly influences the approach to vitreoretinal procedures, as incomplete PVD may require induction during surgery to access posterior retinal pathology.
