Dose constraints are predefined radiation dose limits established for organs at risk (OARs) during treatment planning to prevent or minimize normal tissue complications. These constraints specify maximum allowable doses to critical structures such as spinal cord, brainstem, lungs, heart, and kidneys based on clinical experience, published tolerance data, and institutional protocols. Constraints may be expressed as maximum point doses, mean organ doses, or volume-dose parameters (such as V20 for lung). Adherence to dose constraints is essential for achieving optimal therapeutic ratios between tumor control and normal tissue preservation.
