Full Definition

The hepatobiliary phase is a delayed imaging phase obtained 15-20 minutes after injection of liver-specific MRI contrast agents such as gadoxetic acid. During this phase, functioning hepatocytes take up and concentrate the contrast agent, providing information about hepatocellular function. Normal liver parenchyma appears hyperintense, while lesions lacking functioning hepatocytes appear hypointense. This phase is particularly valuable for detecting small hepatocellular carcinomas, characterizing focal nodular hyperplasia, and assessing liver function. The hepatobiliary phase adds functional information to morphologic imaging, improving diagnostic confidence in hepatic lesion characterization.
