Kilovoltage peak (kVp) represents the maximum electrical potential difference applied across an X-ray tube during imaging acquisition. This parameter directly controls the energy of the X-ray beam, with higher kVp values producing more penetrating X-rays. In diagnostic imaging, kVp selection affects image contrast, patient dose, and beam penetration. Lower kVp values enhance contrast differentiation between soft tissues but increase patient radiation dose, while higher kVp values reduce contrast but decrease dose and improve penetration through dense structures. In oncologic imaging, optimal kVp selection is crucial for adequate tissue visualization while maintaining ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) radiation exposure principles.
