pseudocirrhosis

Morphologic liver changes mimicking cirrhosis caused by chemotherapy or metastatic disease.

Full Definition

Pseudocirrhosis refers to imaging findings that mimic the appearance of cirrhosis but result from different pathologic processes, most commonly chemotherapy-induced hepatic injury or extensive metastatic disease. On CT and MRI, pseudocirrhosis presents with liver surface nodularity, capsular retraction, and compensatory hypertrophy of uninvolved segments, closely resembling true cirrhosis. This condition is particularly associated with certain chemotherapy regimens, especially oxaliplatin-based treatments, and can occur in patients with extensive hepatic metastases following successful treatment. Recognition of pseudocirrhosis is important as it indicates treatment-related changes rather than underlying liver disease and may affect surgical planning and prognosis assessment.
