Rim enhancement describes a characteristic pattern where contrast material preferentially accumulates around the periphery of a lesion, creating a ring-like appearance on CT or MRI. In oncologic radiology, this enhancement pattern can indicate several pathologic processes including abscess formation, necrotic tumor, or certain types of metastases. The rim may be thick or thin, smooth or irregular, and these characteristics help narrow the differential diagnosis. Rim-enhancing lesions in the brain often represent metastases, primary tumors with central necrosis, or inflammatory processes.
