Tumor Regression Grade

Also written as: TRG — Tumor Regression Grade

Histopathologic scoring system quantifying treatment response in resected tumor specimens.

Full Definition

Tumor Regression Grade is a standardized histopathologic assessment tool used to quantify the degree of treatment response in surgically resected tumors, particularly following neoadjuvant chemotherapy or chemoradiation. The grading system typically ranges from TRG 0 (complete pathologic response with no viable tumor cells) to TRG 3 (poor response with minimal treatment effect). TRG assessment provides important prognostic information and helps guide adjuvant treatment decisions, making accurate reporting crucial for patient management.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify the grading system used (e.g., Mandard, AJCC) as scales vary between systems.

In Context

  • "The pathology report indicated TRG 1, suggesting excellent response to neoadjuvant therapy." — Pathology report
  • "Correlation between imaging response and final TRG will be assessed for future treatment planning." — Research protocol
