locoregional recurrence

Cancer recurrence at or near the original tumor site or in regional lymph nodes.

Full Definition

Locoregional recurrence refers to the return of cancer either at the original primary tumor site (local recurrence) or in the regional lymph node basins (regional recurrence) after initial treatment. This type of recurrence suggests inadequate local control from the initial therapy and may indicate incomplete initial resection, aggressive tumor biology, or treatment resistance. Locoregional recurrence is distinguished from distant metastasis and often carries different prognostic implications. Treatment typically involves multimodal therapy including surgery, radiation, and systemic therapy.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from distant recurrence in clinical documentation.
