cyclodialysis

Pronunciation: sy-klo-dy-AL-ih-sis

Separation of the ciliary body from the scleral spur, creating communication between anterior chamber and supraciliary space.

Full Definition

Cyclodialysis is a condition where the ciliary muscle becomes detached from its insertion at the scleral spur, creating an abnormal communication pathway between the anterior chamber and the supraciliary space. This can occur traumatically or as a surgical complication, leading to hypotony due to alternative aqueous drainage. The resulting cyclodialysis cleft appears as a gap in the ciliary body visible on gonioscopy. Surgical repair typically involves direct cyclopexy using sutures, laser photocoagulation, or cryotherapy to reattach the ciliary body to the scleral wall.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from iridodialysis (iris separation) and specify size/location of cleft when documenting.

In Context

  • "Gonioscopy revealed a 90-degree cyclodialysis cleft causing severe hypotony." — Glaucoma examination
  • "Direct cyclopexy was performed to close the cyclodialysis and restore normal IOP." — Surgical repair note
