ectropion

Pronunciation: /ˈɛktroʊpiən/

Outward turning of the eyelid margin causing exposure of the tarsal conjunctiva.

Full Definition

Ectropion is an eyelid malposition where the lid margin turns outward, away from the globe, exposing the inner conjunctival surface. This condition most commonly affects the lower eyelid and can result from age-related tissue laxity (involutional), facial nerve paralysis (paralytic), scarring (cicatricial), or congenital abnormalities. Ectropion leads to poor tear drainage, chronic tearing, conjunctival irritation, and potential corneal exposure problems. Treatment typically involves surgical correction to restore normal lid position and function, with specific techniques chosen based on the underlying cause and severity.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify the type (involutional, cicatricial, paralytic) and affected lid in documentation.
