Ameloblastoma
Pronunciation: ah-mel-oh-BLAS-toh-mah
A benign but locally aggressive odontogenic tumour derived from ameloblastic epithelium, most commonly arising in the mandible.
Full Definition
Ameloblastoma is the most clinically significant benign odontogenic tumour, arising from the epithelial remnants of the enamel organ or dental lamina. It exhibits locally invasive behavior with a high recurrence rate if not treated with adequate surgical margins. The 2017 WHO classification recognizes four distinct types: conventional, unicystic, extraosseous/peripheral, and metastasising ameloblastoma. Histological subtypes include follicular, plexiform, acanthomatous, granular cell, and desmoplastic patterns. Editors should ensure that the subtype and WHO type are both specified when referenced, as they carry distinct clinical and prognostic implications.
Usage
Usage note: 'Adamantinoma' is an archaic synonym; prefer 'ameloblastoma' in all modern editorial contexts. Distinguish clearly from 'ameloblastic carcinoma,' which is malignant.
