A rare, locally aggressive benign odontogenic neoplasm characterised by sheets of polyhedral epithelial cells and extracellular amyloid-like deposits that undergo calcification.

Full Definition

Calcifying Epithelial Odontogenic Tumour (CEOT), also known as Pindborg tumour, is a locally invasive benign neoplasm arising from odontogenic epithelium. Histologically it is distinguished by its hallmark amyloid-like homogeneous eosinophilic material, concentric calcifications (Liesegang rings), and large polyhedral epithelial cells with prominent intercellular bridges. It most commonly occurs in the posterior mandible and is associated with an impacted tooth in roughly half of cases. Editors must not confuse the acronym CEOT with CEOC or similar abbreviations, and should ensure 'Pindborg tumour' is used as an alternative name, not a synonym. WHO classification governs preferred nomenclature.

Usage note: Preferred form in pathology reports is the full term on first use with the acronym CEOT in parentheses. 'Pindborg tumour' is an acceptable alternative name but should not replace the WHO-preferred term as the primary designation.
