Epstein pearls are a subtype of gingival cysts of the newborn, specifically located along the midpalatal raphe. They arise from entrapped epithelial remnants along the line of fusion of the palatal shelves. Clinically, they appear as multiple white or yellow papules and are entirely benign, resolving spontaneously within a few weeks of birth. Editors must distinguish Epstein pearls from Bohn's nodules (arising from minor salivary gland remnants on the alveolar ridges) and from dental lamina cysts (on the alveolar ridges from dental lamina remnants). All three may be collectively termed 'gingival cysts of the newborn' but require precise anatomical identification in formal reports.
