Erythroplakia

Pronunciation: eh-rith-roh-PLAY-kee-ah

A fiery-red oral mucosal patch that cannot be attributed to any other identifiable condition and carries a higher risk of malignant transformation than leukoplakia.

Full Definition

Erythroplakia is a potentially malignant oral mucosal disorder defined clinically as a bright-red velvety plaque that cannot be diagnosed as any other specific condition. It is histologically associated with severe epithelial dysplasia, carcinoma in situ, or invasive squamous cell carcinoma in the majority of biopsied cases, making it more sinister than leukoplakia. Like leukoplakia, it is a clinical, not histological, term. Erythroleukoplakia (mixed red-and-white lesions) is considered the highest-risk variant among potentially malignant oral disorders. Editors should avoid confusing erythroplakia with inflammatory mucosal redness or erythema.

Usage

Usage note: 'Erythroplasia' is an acceptable synonym but less preferred in modern oral pathology literature. Always distinguish from general mucosal erythema, which is not a defined clinical entity.

In Context

  • "Biopsy of the erythroplakia on the floor of mouth revealed carcinoma in situ." — Pathology report
  • "The author used 'erythroplasia' and 'erythroplakia' interchangeably; the editor standardized to 'erythroplakia' throughout." — Copy-editing note
