Florid Cemento-Osseous Dysplasia
A multifocal, bilateral form of cemento-osseous dysplasia characterised by extensive replacement of periapical bone by fibrous tissue and cementum-like calcifications in middle-aged women of African descent.

Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCOD) is the most extensive variant of the cemento-osseous dysplasia spectrum, involving multiple quadrants of the jaw simultaneously. It is most prevalent in middle-aged Black women and is considered a reactive rather than neoplastic process arising from the periodontal ligament. Radiographically, it presents as lobular radiopaque masses with radiolucent margins, replacing the alveolar bone. Osteomyelitis is a known complication, particularly following dental extraction. Editors must distinguish FCOD from ossifying fibroma (which is a distinct neoplasm) and from other forms of cemento-osseous dysplasia. The term 'florid osseous dysplasia' is a deprecated synonym and should be updated in manuscripts.

Usage note: Flag 'florid osseous dysplasia' and 'gigantiform cementoma' as outdated synonyms. Preferred current term is 'florid cemento-osseous dysplasia.' The abbreviation FCOD is acceptable after first use.
