Mural Ameloblastoma
A subtype of unicystic ameloblastoma in which ameloblastomatous epithelium proliferates into and through the fibrous cyst wall, indicating a more aggressive biologic behaviour.
Full Definition
Mural ameloblastoma is the highest-risk subtype in the unicystic ameloblastoma classification (Philipsen and Reichart Type III). Unlike the luminal or intraluminal subtypes, mural growth into the cyst wall carries a significantly elevated risk of recurrence after enucleation alone and may necessitate resection. Editors must be alert to the distinction among luminal, intraluminal, and mural subtypes when editing case reports or systematic reviews, as these terms carry direct management implications. The qualifier 'mural' should not be dropped from the diagnosis even when the text is condensed.
Usage
Usage note: The subtype qualifier (luminal, intraluminal, mural) is clinically critical and must be preserved verbatim when editing pathology reports and case series.
