Full Definition
Peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a common reactive, non-neoplastic gingival growth that originates from cells of the periodontal ligament or periosteum. Histologically, it demonstrates a cellular fibrous stroma containing varying amounts of calcified material, including woven bone, cementum-like material, or dystrophic calcification. It is clinically important to distinguish POF from the central (intraosseous) ossifying fibroma, which is a true neoplasm. Editors must not conflate 'peripheral ossifying fibroma' with 'ossifying fibroma' (the intraosseous entity) or with 'peripheral giant cell granuloma', which has distinct histological features. The modifier 'peripheral' is mandatory and must not be omitted.
