ankylosis

Pronunciation: an-ki-LOH-sis

Abnormal fusion or immobility of a joint, particularly affecting the temporomandibular joint.

Full Definition

Ankylosis refers to the pathological fusion of joint surfaces resulting in complete or partial loss of joint mobility. In oral maxillofacial surgery, temporomandibular joint ankylosis is a serious condition that can result from trauma, infection, or developmental disorders. The condition may be fibrous (involving scar tissue) or bony (involving actual bone fusion). Treatment typically requires surgical intervention including gap arthroplasty, joint reconstruction, or total joint replacement, often combined with aggressive post-operative physiotherapy to prevent recurrence.

Usage

Usage note: Specify whether ankylosis is fibrous or bony, and always document the degree of mouth opening limitation.

In Context

  • "The patient presented with complete TMJ ankylosis and maximum mouth opening of only 8 millimeters." — Clinical examination note
  • "Gap arthroplasty was performed to address the bony ankylosis of the left temporomandibular joint." — Operative procedure description
