ectropion

Pronunciation: /ɪkˈtroʊpiɒn/

Outward turning of the eyelid margin that may occur following midface trauma or surgical procedures.

Full Definition

Ectropion represents a complication of facial trauma or surgery involving the midface, where the lower eyelid margin turns outward, exposing the conjunctival surface and potentially causing functional and aesthetic problems. In oral and maxillofacial surgery, this condition may result from inadequate support of the orbital floor during fracture repair, excessive scar tissue formation, or damage to the orbicularis oculi muscle during surgical approaches. Prompt recognition and correction are important to prevent corneal exposure and associated complications.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from 'entropion' (inward turning) which has opposite presentation.

In Context

  • "Mild ectropion developed following orbital floor reconstruction and resolved with conservative management." — Complication report
  • "The patient was monitored for signs of ectropion during the post-operative healing period." — Follow-up note
