enucleation

Surgical removal of a cystic lesion along with its intact epithelial lining from surrounding bone or soft tissue.

Full Definition

Enucleation is a conservative surgical technique used primarily for the treatment of odontogenic cysts and benign tumors of the jaws. The procedure involves careful dissection and complete removal of the lesion while preserving the cyst wall intact, which allows for histopathological examination and reduces the risk of recurrence. This approach is preferred over marsupialization when complete access to the lesion is possible and when preservation of adjacent vital structures can be achieved.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from 'excision' which may not imply intact removal of cystic structures.

In Context

  • "Enucleation of the radicular cyst was performed with preservation of the adjacent tooth roots." — Operative report
  • "The specimen was sent for histopathological examination following complete enucleation." — Pathology requisition
