fibrous dysplasia

A benign bone disorder where normal bone is replaced by fibrous tissue and immature bone.

Full Definition

A developmental bone disorder characterized by the replacement of normal bone and marrow with fibrous tissue containing irregular trabeculae of woven bone. In the craniofacial region, fibrous dysplasia can cause facial asymmetry, malocclusion, and bone expansion. The condition may be monostotic (single bone) or polyostotic (multiple bones). Treatment is typically conservative with surgical intervention reserved for functional or severe aesthetic concerns.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from similar-appearing lesions like ossifying fibroma based on radiographic and histologic features.
