Erythroplakia
Pronunciation: eh-RITH-roh-PLAY-kee-uh
A fiery red patch of the oral mucosa that cannot be clinically or pathologically attributed to any other condition and carries a high risk of malignant transformation.
Full Definition
Erythroplakia is rarer than leukoplakia but carries a significantly higher risk of harbouring severe dysplasia or carcinoma in situ at the time of diagnosis. It is classified as a potentially malignant disorder (PMD) of the oral cavity by the WHO. Editors must distinguish erythroplakia from erythematous candidiasis, which has a clinical resemblance but a fungal aetiology. Mixed red-and-white lesions may be described as erythroleukoplakia, a combined term that editors should preserve if used consistently by the author. The term is not hyphenated and should not be written as 'erythro-plakia'.
Usage
Usage note: Do not substitute with 'red lesion' in formal clinical documents. Erythroplakia implies a specific diagnostic category with defined malignant potential.
