Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid
Also written as: MMP
A group of autoimmune subepithelial blistering diseases that primarily affect mucous membranes, including the oral and ocular mucosa.
Full Definition
Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP), formerly known as cicatricial pemphigoid, is characterised by autoantibodies targeting the basement membrane zone, resulting in subepithelial blisters that heal with scarring (cicatrisation). Ocular involvement can lead to blindness, making prompt identification in clinical documents of high importance. Editors should note that the preferred current term is 'mucous membrane pemphigoid' rather than the older 'cicatricial pemphigoid,' though the latter may appear in older references. MMP must be distinguished from pemphigus vulgaris, which is intraepithelial. The abbreviation MMP is standard and should be defined on first use.
Usage
Usage note: 'Cicatricial pemphigoid' is an older synonym; contemporary manuscripts should use 'mucous membrane pemphigoid.' Flag uses of the old term and query the author. Do not substitute MMP for pemphigus vulgaris.

- "The manuscript used 'cicatricial pemphigoid' throughout; the editor queried whether to update to the current preferred term 'MMP'." — Editorial correspondence
