Panoramic Radiograph

Also written as: OPT — Orthopantomograph

A single extraoral dental radiograph that displays the entire upper and lower jaws, teeth, and associated structures on one film or digital detector using a rotating X-ray source.

Full Definition

A panoramic radiograph, also known as an orthopantomogram (OPG or OPT), is a wide-field dental imaging technique employing tomographic rotation of the X-ray source and detector around the patient's head to produce a two-dimensional representation of the dentition, alveolar bone, temporomandibular joints, sinuses, and surrounding structures. In oral medicine documents, editors encounter both 'OPG' and 'OPT' as abbreviations; house style should select one and apply it consistently, noting that 'OPG' derives from the historical brand name Orthopantomograph and some journals prefer the generic 'OPT' or 'panoramic radiograph'. The modality is distinct from periapical, bitewing, or occlusal radiographs, which are intraoral.

Usage

Usage note: OPG is a brand-derived abbreviation; many journals prefer 'OPT' or 'panoramic radiograph'. Standardize abbreviation use within a document and expand on first use.

In Context
