guided bone regeneration

A surgical technique using barrier membranes to promote selective bone growth in deficient areas.

Full Definition

Guided bone regeneration (GBR) is a surgical procedure that uses barrier membranes and bone graft materials to regenerate lost alveolar bone. The membrane excludes fast-growing soft tissue cells while allowing slower-growing bone cells to populate the defect area. This technique is commonly used to augment bone volume prior to implant placement or to treat periodontal defects. Success depends on proper membrane selection, adequate space maintenance, primary closure, and appropriate healing time.

Usage

Usage note: Often abbreviated as GBR in clinical documentation.
