In oral surgery, impaction refers to a tooth that cannot emerge normally through the gum tissue due to physical obstruction by other teeth, bone, or soft tissue. Third molars (wisdom teeth) are most commonly impacted, requiring surgical extraction. The degree of impaction affects surgical complexity and post-operative complications. Classification systems describe impaction based on depth, angulation, and relationship to adjacent structures.
