Full Definition
Marsupialisation is a conservative surgical approach for treating large cysts, particularly odontogenic cysts, by creating a window in the cyst wall and suturing the cyst lining to the oral mucosa. This creates a permanent opening that allows the cyst contents to drain continuously into the oral cavity. The technique is preferred over enucleation when the cyst is large and enucleation would risk damage to vital structures. The cyst gradually shrinks over time as the lining epithelium transforms.
