platelet-rich fibrin

A concentrated preparation of platelets and growth factors derived from the patient's blood to enhance healing.

Full Definition

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a second-generation platelet concentrate that forms a natural fibrin matrix containing platelets, leukocytes, and growth factors. Unlike platelet-rich plasma (PRP), PRF requires no anticoagulants or additives and forms a stable clot that releases growth factors slowly over time. It is used to enhance soft tissue healing, bone regeneration, and reduce post-operative complications. PRF is commonly applied in extraction sockets, sinus augmentation procedures, and periodontal regenerative therapy.

Usage note: Distinguish from PRP (platelet-rich plasma) which has different preparation and properties.
