Subcondylar Fracture

Pronunciation: sub-KON-dy-lar FRAK-chur

Mandibular fracture occurring below the condylar neck, often requiring surgical reduction.

Full Definition

Subcondylar fracture is a break in the mandible that occurs in the region between the condylar neck and the sigmoid notch. These fractures are common in mandibular trauma and can be unilateral or bilateral. Clinical presentation includes malocclusion, limited mouth opening, deviation on opening, and possible facial asymmetry. Treatment options include closed reduction with maxillomandibular fixation or open reduction with internal fixation (ORIF). The decision depends on factors such as displacement, age of patient, occlusion, and presence of bilateral fractures. Complications include temporomandibular joint dysfunction and facial nerve injury.

Usage

Usage note: Location specification is critical for treatment planning and prognosis.
