CBCT

Pronunciation: see-bee-see-tee

Also written as: CBCT — Cone Beam Computed Tomography

Cone Beam Computed Tomography; a three-dimensional radiographic imaging technique used in orthodontics to assess skeletal structures, root morphology, and impacted teeth.

Full Definition

CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) produces 3D volumetric images of the craniofacial skeleton using a cone-shaped X-ray beam and a digital detector rotating around the patient. In orthodontics, it is indicated for complex cases involving impacted teeth, skeletal discrepancies, root resorption assessment, and pre-surgical planning. Unlike conventional 2D radiographs, CBCT enables precise spatial localisation of unerupted teeth. Editors must render the abbreviation in all caps and expand it on first use. CBCT should not be referred to as 'CT scan', as the technology and radiation dose differ substantially.

Usage

Usage note: Do not abbreviate as 'CT scan' or 'cone beam CT scan' interchangeably; use CBCT consistently after first expansion.

In Context

  • "A CBCT was requested to localise the palatally impacted maxillary canine prior to surgical exposure." — Referral letter
  • "The editor queried whether 'CT scan' in the methods section should be amended to 'CBCT' given the clinical context." — Manuscript peer-review response
