Dental attachments are tooth-coloured composite bumps or geometric shapes adhered to specific tooth surfaces as part of a clear aligner treatment plan. They function as handles that allow aligners to exert forces and moments that would otherwise be impossible on smooth enamel. Attachment shape (rectangular, elliptical, bevelled) is chosen according to the movement required. Editors must not confuse 'attachments' with 'bonded retainers' or 'brackets', which are distinct devices. The term is also used in implant dentistry with an entirely different meaning, making context essential.
