Basic Semi-formal In the Industry Vocabulary Test

Retainer

A fixed or removable orthodontic appliance worn after active treatment to maintain the corrected position of teeth and prevent relapse.

Full Definition

A retainer is prescribed at the completion of active orthodontic treatment to stabilise tooth positions while the periodontal fibres and bone remodel around the new alignment. Retainers may be removable (e.g., Hawley retainer, vacuum-formed/Essix retainer) or fixed (e.g., a bonded lingual retainer). Editors should note that 'retainer' in legal and financial documents has an entirely different meaning; in orthodontic text the clinical sense is always intended. The term should not be confused with 'removable appliance', which is used during active treatment.

Usage

Usage note: In clinical orthodontic documents, 'retainer' always denotes a post-treatment stabilising device. Editors working across industries must not import the legal/financial definition. Specify type (fixed, removable, Hawley, Essix) when precision is required.

In Context

  • "The patient was issued upper and lower vacuum-formed retainers with instructions for full-time wear for six months." — Debond appointment record
  • "A fixed lingual retainer was bonded from canine to canine in the lower arch." — Retention protocol document
