Root Resorption

Pronunciation: ROOT re-SORP-shun

The loss of root structure resulting from the activity of odontoclasts, which can be a physiological process during primary tooth exfoliation or a pathological complication of orthodontic tooth movement.

Full Definition

External apical root resorption (EARR) is the most clinically significant form in orthodontic practice and refers to shortening of the root apex as a consequence of mechanical forces applied by orthodontic appliances. It must be distinguished from internal root resorption, which originates within the pulp canal. Editors must ensure that documents specify the type of root resorption—internal or external, cervical or apical—and not use the term generically. In radiographic reports, the degree of resorption should be quantified or graded using a recognised system. 'Resorption' is the correct spelling; 'reabsorption' is a distinct physiological process and is an error in this context.

Usage note: Do not substitute 'reabsorption' for 'resorption'; these are distinct processes. Specify the type (external apical, internal, cervical) wherever possible. Abbreviation EARR (External Apical Root Resorption) should be defined on first use.
