cement augmentation

The use of bone cement to strengthen bone weakened by tumor involvement, often performed to prevent pathological fracture.

Full Definition

Cement augmentation is a minimally invasive procedure in which polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement is injected into bone lesions to provide mechanical support and prevent pathological fracture. This technique is commonly used for metastatic bone disease, multiple myeloma, and certain benign aggressive lesions. The procedure can be performed percutaneously under image guidance or during open surgery. Cement augmentation provides immediate pain relief and mechanical stability, allowing patients to maintain mobility and function. The exothermic reaction during cement polymerization may also provide a local cytotoxic effect against tumor cells.
