The sunburst pattern is a distinctive radiographic finding observed in rapidly growing bone tumors, particularly osteosarcoma. It occurs when reactive new bone formation creates perpendicular spicules that extend from the cortical surface, resembling rays of sunlight. This pattern indicates aggressive tumor growth that has breached the cortex and stimulated an intense periosteal reaction. While not pathognomonic for any single tumor type, the sunburst pattern is most commonly associated with high-grade osteosarcoma and suggests a poor prognosis. Radiologists and orthopedic oncologists use this finding as part of their differential diagnosis and staging assessment.
