Tumor hyperthermia is a treatment modality that uses controlled heating to temperatures between 40-45°C (104-113°F) to treat malignant tumors. In orthopedic oncology, hyperthermia is most commonly used as an adjuvant to chemotherapy for treating soft tissue sarcomas, particularly in extremity perfusion protocols. The heat enhances drug uptake, increases tumor blood flow, and directly damages tumor cells while having less effect on normal tissues. Regional hyperthermia can be delivered through various methods including radiofrequency, microwave, or ultrasound energy sources.
