A capsular pattern is a characteristic limitation of joint motion that occurs in a predictable sequence when the joint capsule is inflamed, fibrotic, or mechanically restricted. Each joint has its own capsular pattern; for example, the shoulder shows greatest limitation in external rotation, followed by abduction, then internal rotation. Recognition of capsular patterns helps editors distinguish between capsular and non-capsular joint dysfunction in rehabilitation documentation.
